Alphabet Beats Apple on Value and AI Edge

Buffett’s tech favorites show clear differences; Alphabet offers better value and growth than Apple today.

Apple’s ecosystem is a marvel—once you’re in, switching costs are high and services rake in steady margin-rich revenue. Yet, this premium comfort comes at a steep price, trading around 35 times expected earnings. That’s a stretch in today’s environment when growth expectations are more cautious. Alphabet, on the other hand, is less expensive at below 25 times forward earnings. It leads on artificial intelligence—Google’s custom TPU chips outperform Nvidia in cost efficiency and power, embedding AI across search and ads. This spells growth potential. For JSE investors, this dynamic matters because Prosus, which holds a big Alphabet stake, should benefit as AI monetization unfolds. Meanwhile, the rand's relative stability against the dollar supports this exposure without fueling currency risk too much. The risk? Alphabet’s ad revenues can dip if a global economic slowdown hits harder than expected, which could pull Prosus down too. Still, from a valuation and tech leadership angle, Alphabet feels like the smarter buy now. this is just my opinion and not financial advice

How I would invest

Increase exposure to Prosus for leveraged AI growth with a more attractive valuation, while trimming Apple-related holdings to mitigate valuation risk.

Focus assets
  • Prosus
  • USD/ZAR
What could go wrong
  • Global economic slowdown reducing advertising spend
  • Rand depreciation weighing on offshore earnings for Prosus
Confidence

7/10

Warren Buffett holds positions in both Apple and Alphabet. While Apple has an excellent business model with its closed-loop ecosystem and high-margin services, its valuation is stretched at a forward P/E of 35x. Alphabet, trading at a forward P/E below 25x, offers better value with strong AI capabilities, custom TPU chips, and significant growth opportunities, making it the better buy currently.

Sentiment: Positive - Apple has an excellent compounding business model with a strong closed-loop ecosystem, predictable hardware replacement cycles, and high-margin services revenue. However, the positive sentiment is tempered by concerns about its elevated valuation at 35x forward P/E. Alphabet is positioned as the most complete AI player with superior custom TPU chips, strong distribution advantages, and embedded AI in Google Search. Trading at a lower forward P/E of below 25x compared to Apple, it offers better value with significant growth opportunities ahead.
