Nuclear Energy Is Winning Repeated Government Backing and Investors Should Take Notice

Why South African Investors Should Care About the Nuclear Energy Push
U.S. government backing for nuclear energy expansion could impact the rand and select JSE sectors.
The U.S. is doubling down on nuclear power with a clear goal to quadruple capacity by 2050. This isn’t just about clean energy—it’s about energy security and technological leadership. Although these moves are U.S.-centric, the ripple effects are relevant here. Uranium prices are likely to climb, which could buoy companies with African mining interests and support the rand. Sasol, typically an energy heavyweight in South Africa, will feel pressure from cleaner alternatives gaining traction globally, potentially challenging its carbon-heavy profile. Financially, banks like FirstRand and Standard Bank might see increased demand for project financing tied to the new energy infrastructure, but their exposure is indirect. In the local currency space, expect a cautious rand response. The USD/ZAR could face volatility as investors weigh energy transition risks globally. That said, these are long-term shifts, and the local benefits will not be immediate or linear. If nuclear tech stalls or cheaper renewables keep momentum, this thesis weakens. this is just my opinion and not financial advice
Watch uranium-linked plays with South African mining exposure cautiously, and hold rand positions lightly hedged. Avoid heavy bets on Sasol given its carbon risk and wait to see if local banks expand financing into nuclear projects before committing.

- FirstRand
- Slower-than-expected nuclear tech adoption
- Stronger renewables undercutting nuclear demand

The U.S. government is providing substantial support for nuclear energy expansion, with Trump's May 2025 executive order aiming to increase nuclear capacity from 100 gigawatts to 400 gigawatts by 2050. This creates investment opportunities across multiple nuclear-related companies, from uranium producers to reactor manufacturers and emerging small modular reactor technologies.
