Supermicro Stock Just Jumped 20%. Why I'm Passing and Buying This AI Leader Instead.

Pass on Supermicro, Back Nvidia for AI Growth

Supermicro’s strong quarterly results mask deeper risks—Nvidia remains the cleaner AI play for South African investors.

Supermicro’s recent 20% rally on improved margins and AI-driven demand is tempting, but the underlying business model remains low-margin and risky. Their role as a server integrator means they’re stuck between chip makers and end users, with supply chain challenges adding temporary boosts to profits. The added controversy of a Taiwan office raid tied to chip smuggling makes Supermicro a shaky bet. Instead, Nvidia, with gross margins north of 70% and undeniable dominance in AI GPUs, offers a purer, higher-quality exposure to the sector. For JSE investors, Nvidia’s health has clear knock-on effects, often supporting the rand via tech-related inflows and influencing counters like Naspers and Prosus, given their heavy tech linkages. That said, Nvidia’s valuation is not dirt cheap, and if AI hype fades or semiconductor cycles turn, even this leadership won’t be immune. Still, the evidence points squarely to Nvidia over Supermicro. this is just my opinion and not financial advice

How I would invest

Avoid Supermicro for now and allocate capital towards Nvidia for clean exposure to AI infrastructure growth. Keep an eye on the USD/ZAR, as tech inflows tend to support the rand when Nvidia does well.

Focus assets
  • NVDA
  • USD/ZAR
What could go wrong
  • Escalation of geopolitical issues affecting Nvidia or global chip supply
  • A sudden downturn in AI investment reducing demand for GPUs
Confidence

7/10

Supermicro's stock surged 20% after announcing strong Q2 preliminary results with improved gross margins of 15-17%, driven by AI infrastructure demand and supply shortages. However, the analyst recommends buying Nvidia instead, citing Supermicro's low-margin business model, history of controversy (including a Taiwan office raid related to chip smuggling), and the fact that most value resides with Nvidia's GPUs rather than the integrator.

Sentiment: Mixed - While the company showed margin improvement and strong revenue growth, the analyst views it as a low-margin middleman with temporary margin gains due to supply shortages. The company also faces controversy from Taiwan office raids related to chip smuggling, making it a riskier investment despite positive Q2 results. Presented as the superior investment choice with 74% gross margins, strong market leadership in AI infrastructure, and a reasonable forward P/E of 16x. The analyst views Supermicro's strong results as a positive leading indicator for Nvidia's continued demand, and recommends buying Nvidia as the high-quality market leader without the controversy.
